Green Lantern is the alias of several characters in DC Comics, most notably Hal Jordan. He first appeared in *All-American Comics* #16 (July 1940) as Alan Scott. In the movie *Green Lantern*, Ryan Reynolds portrays Hal Jordan, a test pilot chosen by a dying alien Abin Sur to inherit his power ring and become a member of the intergalactic Green Lantern Corps.
The Green Lantern Corps is a peacekeeping organization powered by willpower. Each Green Lantern wields a power ring that can manifest constructs based on the wearer's imagination and willpower. Jordan struggles initially to master the ring's abilities and his new responsibilities.
He eventually rises to the challenge, battling Parallax, a fear entity that threatens Earth and the Lantern Corps. In the film, the Lantern Corps' origin and purpose are explored, setting the stage for potential sequels focused on the wider Lantern Corps universe.
